My top films
This won't be in any specific order, but if you are looking for something new and exciting to watch, then you might be able to find it here! I will keep updating this list.
1. Everything Everywhere All At Once
This was my favourite film of 2022. It is goofy, and despite its plot holes, it is a cathartic film to watch that deals with everything, from immigrant struggles to omnipotent bagels/
2. Last Night in Soho
I mainly watched this because I heard Matt Smith was in it and I loved his work in Doctor Who, but this was a dark yet enjoyable film. The dance scene is a highlight, and it's a fascinating plot
3. Jojo Rabbit
One of the best dark comedies I've ever seen in my life. It balances the horror of the past with ridiculing its worst figures, and all while being told through the perspective of a child which makes it even more impactful. Scarlett Johansson absolutely nails it
4. Knives Out
The opening string quartet drew me in immediately, and it turned out to be a fun murder mystery film, that feels like Agatha Christie taking herself much less seriously. Yes, it is goofy, but is such a fun movie to watch and just enjoy
5. Parasite
There have been many films talking about class divide, but the way Bong Joon-ho does it is incredible. This was a fascinating watch, which warranted me doing a whole assignment on it which helped me appreciate the insane thought behind every single lighting and architectural decision
6. Whiplash
Any story about an over-obsessed artist is always a favourite of mine, and with the incredible score, this is the one I love the most in this genre
7. Lord of the Rings trilogy
This is one of the most faithful book to screen adaptations which you can tell was made with love. Even if you are not a fan of the books, it's impossible not to get immersed
8. Any Studio Ghibli film
I couldn't possibly pick one to put here, so any Studio Ghibli film is a favourite. The animation and the stories are one of a kind, and they make for incredibly cozy movies to watch
9. The Shining
A horror classic. As a fan of the book, the film did feel a bit off, but the score combined with some gorgeous shots means I absolutely can't resist watching this every spooky season
10. Silence of the Lambs
One of the creepiest films I have watched, and definitely made me uncomfortable, which is an experience you don't get too often in the modern film industry. Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins both serve incredible performances that makes this one of the best horror films of all time.
11. American Psycho
A controversial film upon release, but a fascinating adaptation of the book. You go in with many questions and leave with so much more. Much like Silence of the Lambs, it was uncomfortable from start to finish, but I was so drawn to it by the mystery of it all.
